The city is also known as the gateway to the Himalayan Shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.

Termed as a spiritual centre, it is believed that God appeared in the form of Hrishikesh to reward sage Raibhya Rishi for his severe penance here, hence giving the city its name. Internationally recognized ashrams, centers of philosophical studies, yoga, and meditation invite tourists year around into the city.
